Excerpt: ...But as this is aMatter of great Importance, and teaches farther than my present Subject, which is that of Persuasion, lhave given it a Place in the twelfth, which is the last, Book of this Treatise. Mean while, I am not for having any thing done in a scandalous Manner. But these are Qiestions of a moral Kind, and they may be discussed in Schools, and become imaginary Themes of Declamation. Yet still we ought to be acquainted with the lrVays of the Wicked, that we may the better know how to persevere in those of the Virtuous. (hl As this Epistle of Cicero to Brutus is now lost, it is difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain which are the Words of Cicero, and which of tzza'rztilinn in this Passage. l follow the Edition of brePhanur, printed at Partsir, 154z, which I think to be osthe greatest Authority; But-man, and the rest of the Dutch Commenta'ors, which is generally the Case when there is any Difficulty, not saylng a Word of the Matter. There is in the i; Epist. l. 7. of Citera's Epistles to Arcita-i, an Expression whicsih might be a great deal to our Author's Purpose, for he there says, 'lhat in a Council held by'the Lonsuls and other senators, to deliberate upon the Measures they were to take, in regard to Cd'st'r, Cato him-elf declared, that he thought'it much better to submit to Cd's/N', than to fight with him. Cato, says he, em'm zpsh jane/envy e, quem page/ire marvail. Upon the whole however, I am inclined to believe, that the Czrsar mentioned here by Quirztz/iam is not 'To/int, but AttSW/FW Case-r, nor do I remember that this Passage has ever been considet'd by Dr. llsia'dt'eton, or any of Cicero's A pologisls. It It is proper however that l should here caution my Reader, when he wants to persuade a good Man to an immoral...
